Twelve new cottages are slated for construction at Dalvay by the Sea, complementing the existing eight cottages in the area. The project, a partnership between D.P. Murphy and Parks Canada, aims to enhance the site’s appeal and extend the tourism season into winter months. Discussions regarding this development have been ongoing for several months, reflecting a shared vision for the area’s future.

In a public information session held on Saturday, attendees were given the opportunity to learn more about the initiative and its potential impact on the community. Danny Cusack, a realty adviser for Parks Canada, emphasized the alignment of goals between the agency and D.P. Murphy. He noted, “Twelve proposed cottages will bring more people to the area. It matches what is the use of the property consistently now.”

The cottages are designed to facilitate tourism, ensuring that the character of the property remains intact. According to Cusack, this development is intended to bolster the local economy and support sustainability. He explained that increased revenue from the new cottages would be reinvested into the hotel, enhancing the overall visitor experience at Dalvay by the Sea.

Environmental Considerations and Next Steps

The project has undergone significant preparatory work, including an environmental impact assessment, Indigenous consultations, and an archaeological dig. Cullen Mullally, D.P. Murphy’s legal counsel, highlighted that the cottages will be constructed in a manner that allows for their removal if necessary, adhering to best practices for environmental stewardship.

Mullally stated, “We’re hoping that everything goes to plan and we can start construction on some of the civil work later this month and continue that after the winter when the weather permits.” This timeline suggests that initial groundwork could begin as early as March 2024, with subsequent construction phases planned for the warmer months.

The development will utilize more land than what is included within D.P. Murphy’s lease. This expansion reflects a growing recognition of the need for enhanced facilities to accommodate tourists year-round. The cottages represent a strategic investment in the future of Dalvay by the Sea, catering to an increasing demand for winter tourism options in Prince Edward Island.

As the project progresses, both D.P. Murphy and Parks Canada remain committed to ensuring that the development aligns with the interests of the local community, ultimately aiming to create a self-sustaining tourism hub.
