Vestas Boosts Production in Poland for Germany’s Wind Energy Surge
Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas is set to expand its production capabilities in Poland, primarily to meet the increasing demand for wind turbines in Germany. This decision comes in light of a significant rise in the country’s wind energy capacity. According to a report from Reuters, Vestas plans to add a new production line at its factory in Goleniow and hire an additional 300 workers.
Germany is expected to enhance its wind turbine capacity by 5.1 GW in 2025, following a remarkable addition of 2.2 GW during the first half of the year. This increase represents a notable 67% growth compared to the same period last year, marking the highest first-half wind capacity growth in eight years. Despite these advancements, the German wind energy association has indicated that the current pace of installations falls short of achieving the targets set by the Renewable Energy Sources Act, known as the EEG.
Record Approvals and Future Challenges
During the first half of 2025, Germany approved a total of 7.8 GW of new wind energy capacity, a record for any first half of the year. This figure represents a 55% increase from the same timeframe in 2024. Despite this progress, the president of the wind industry association stated in July that the targets outlined in the EEG will not be attainable until at least 2026.
As the renewable energy sector gains momentum, calls for reform have emerged. Recently, Leonhard Birnbaum, the chief executive of E.ON, one of Germany’s largest power utilities, advocated for an end to subsidies for wind and solar power. In an interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung, he emphasized that priority for grid connections should go to projects that create jobs. He noted, “The costs for the fixed feed-in tariff for new solar power may look harmless per year, but the subsidy often runs for 20 years, and that adds up to billions.”
Vestas’s expansion in Poland signifies a strategic response to the rapid growth of wind energy in Germany. The company aims to play a crucial role in the energy transition while navigating the complexities of subsidy policies and the ambitious targets set by European energy legislation. The developments in both production capacity and policy reform will be critical in shaping the future of wind energy in Europe.
