Adam Schipper Discusses the Challenges and Rewards of Academia
As the landscape of higher education continues to evolve, many aspiring academics face a myriad of choices and challenges. In an enlightening conversation, Adam Schipper, a part-time professor at Brandon University and a graduate of Neelin High School, shared his experiences navigating the world of academia. With a PhD in Philosophy, Schipper’s insights shed light on both the rewards and difficulties of life in academia today.
Life as a Part-Time Professor
Schipper teaches Philosophy and English Literature online from his home in Montreal. His daily routine involves preparing lessons, engaging with students via online platforms, and managing his research projects. “I have to be my own boss,” Schipper explained, emphasizing the self-discipline required in his profession. He balances teaching with his own academic pursuits, often dedicating afternoons to working on journal articles.
Collaboration in research varies, according to Schipper. While philosophy can be a solitary endeavor, he has engaged in interdisciplinary projects, such as working with a hospice nurse on clinical nursing theory. “It’s quite a solitary profession, at least in the humanities,” he noted.
A Journey Through Academia
Reflecting on his academic journey, Schipper recalled starting his PhD at Queens University in 2018, after spending time away from academia working various jobs. “I had to ask myself, ‘Am I doing this for me?'” he recalled, highlighting a pivotal moment that reinforced his commitment to academia. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Schipper found support among his peers and mentors, which helped him navigate his studies effectively.
He advised those interested in pursuing a PhD to avoid comparing their journeys to others, emphasizing that each academic path is unique. “Only you can do your academic journey,” he stated, pointing out that self-comparison can hinder personal growth.
As universities face funding cuts, Schipper acknowledged the difficulties of securing teaching positions. “Every year, there are fewer jobs and more applicants,” he explained, noting the increasing number of academics transitioning to non-academic careers. Despite these challenges, he remains hopeful, leveraging his experience to navigate the competitive landscape of higher education.
Schipper also discussed the impact of technological advancements, particularly the rise of AI in education. He expressed concern over students using tools like ChatGPT to complete assignments, which he believes undermines the learning experience. “It takes away the unique opportunity to grow as a human being,” he said.
Teaching remotely has its own set of challenges, especially in engaging students with dense philosophical texts. Schipper employs various strategies to capture students’ attention, emphasizing the importance of creating a connection, whether in person or online.
Philosophy often faces scrutiny regarding its value, yet Schipper staunchly defends its significance. “Everyone has difficult questions that may never have easy answers,” he stated, asserting that philosophy fosters critical thinking and personal growth.
Ultimately, Schipper’s journey through academia reflects not only the challenges faced by educators today but also the profound rewards that come with pursuing knowledge and understanding. As he aptly summarized, “We have to take care of each other,” highlighting the necessity of compassion and mutual support in an increasingly complex world.
