Life as a Part-Time Professor

Schipper teaches Philosophy and English Literature online from his home in Montreal. Reflecting on his academic journey, Schipper recalled starting his PhD at Queens University in 2018, after spending time away from academia working various jobs. “I had to ask myself, ‘Am I doing this for me?'” he recalled, highlighting a pivotal moment that reinforced his commitment to academia. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Schipper found support among his peers and mentors, which helped him navigate his studies effectively.

He advised those interested in pursuing a PhD to avoid comparing their journeys to others, emphasizing that each academic path is unique. “Only you can do your academic journey,” he stated, pointing out that self-comparison can hinder personal growth.

As universities face funding cuts, Schipper acknowledged the difficulties of securing teaching positions. “Every year, there are fewer jobs and more applicants,” he explained, noting the increasing number of academics transitioning to non-academic careers. Despite these challenges, he remains hopeful, leveraging his experience to navigate the competitive landscape of higher education.

Schipper also discussed the impact of technological advancements, particularly the rise of AI in education. He expressed concern over students using tools like ChatGPT to complete assignments, which he believes undermines the learning experience. “It takes away the unique opportunity to grow as a human being,” he said.
