Assiniboine College Launches $750K Creative CoLab for Community Innovation
Assiniboine College inaugurated a new community workspace, the Creative CoLab, on March 15, 2024, at its east Brandon campus. This facility, which represents an investment of $750,000, is equipped with advanced technology, including 3D printers, laser engravers, and various crafting stations. The grand opening event showcased the versatile features of the space, designed to foster collaboration among individuals in the creative industries.
During the launch, college president Mark Frison emphasized that the Creative CoLab is intended for community use, stating, “What it will do is serve as the base for us to bring people together in the creative industry.” He highlighted the space’s potential to connect local employers with skilled workers, particularly in design and technology fields.
Innovative Space Designed for Collaboration
The Creative CoLab features a wide-open floor plan, which includes a projector, cameras, scanners, and a conference table, providing an ideal environment for teamwork and creative projects. Jana Sproule, chair of media and office technology at the college, noted the thoughtful selection of equipment, saying, “We chose things that interface with technology.” This focus on digital tools aims to bridge the gap between traditional education and modern technological demands.
The design of the facility also reflects a commitment to collaborative work, with ample room set aside for workshops and group activities. Derek Ford, the CoLab coordinator, explained the significance of the name, stating, “That’s the idea, that we’re going to synthesize in here.” He expressed a desire to retain local talent, remarking, “I want more of those people to be able to stay if they want to.”
Approximately 75 guests attended the opening, which included catered food and tours of the available equipment. The CoLab, previously utilized for shipping and receiving, underwent a transformation over the past year and a half to become a hub for innovation and creativity.
Support from Government and Local Partners
The development of the Creative CoLab received support from Prairies Economic Development Canada, bringing the total investment in the college’s Centre for Creative Media to nearly $3 million. A representative from the department acknowledged Brandon’s suitability for such a creative workspace, calling the project’s completion an exciting milestone.
Frison outlined plans for future programming at the CoLab, which will include partnerships with organizations such as Westman Immigrant Services and North Forge, aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and community engagement. He stated, “In addition to state-of-the-art space and equipment, we will work with creative industries to create connections, expose opportunities, and increase economic activity in knowledge-based industries in the region.”
As Assiniboine College embarks on this new venture, the Creative CoLab stands as a testament to its commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration within the community. The initiative not only enhances the college’s educational offerings but also seeks to energize the local economy by supporting creative professionals and entrepreneurs.
