Brandon School Division Superintendent Mathew Gustafson to Retire

The superintendent of the Brandon School Division, Mathew Gustafson, has officially announced his retirement, effective August 7, 2026. Gustafson’s decision was shared during a board meeting by Linda Ross, the board chair, who read an excerpt from his resignation letter. In it, Gustafson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community since joining the division in 2002.

In his letter, Gustafson stated, “It is with great difficulty that I give my notice to retire from my role as superintendent and CEO of the Brandon School Division.” He emphasized the collaborative spirit and professionalism of his colleagues, noting, “I consider myself blessed to have worked alongside such caring and committed staff.”

Gustafson’s tenure in leadership spans over two decades, including 11 years in senior administration. He transitioned to the role of superintendent in early 2021. Reflecting on his decision, he mentioned, “At a certain point, even when you enjoy what you do, it’s time to step aside and let someone else take over.” His intention to retire in 2026 aims to provide ample time for the board to identify a suitable successor.

During the meeting, Ross commended Gustafson for his unwavering dedication and steady leadership. “I’d like to thank Mathew for all his years of service and the amazing job he has done as superintendent,” she remarked. Deputy chair Duncan Ross echoed these sentiments, describing Gustafson as a “steadfast rock of competency” who consistently delivered for the division.

Trustee Kim Fallis highlighted Gustafson’s preparedness and professionalism, stating, “You were always ready with the answers we needed. Your main goal has always been the success of parents and students in BSD, and that dedication has shown in everything you’ve done.”

Looking ahead, Gustafson plans to stay active in the community post-retirement. He humorously noted, “I might be helping my brother-in-law run the combine in the fall,” but also expressed a desire to volunteer and remain involved in education in some capacity.

As the Brandon School Division prepares for this transition, the contributions of Mathew Gustafson over the years will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the students, parents, and staff he has served.
