Brandon University and Assiniboine College Host Exciting Events This Week

Brandon University and Assiniboine College are bustling with activities this week, offering students a range of engaging events. Classes at Brandon University resumed on November 17, 2025, following the fall break, and students are gearing up for the Long Night Against Procrastination, set for Wednesday at the John E. Robbins Library. This event, running from 19:00 to 02:00, provides a safe space for students to study and write, complete with snacks and academic support.

In addition to the study event, the Science Seminar Series will feature a talk by Rory Lucyshyn-Wright from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Scheduled for Friday at 14:30 in Room 4-47 of the John R. Brodie Science Centre, Lucyshyn-Wright will explore concepts of category theory, axiomatics, and abstraction in mathematics. As sports fans prepare for the weekend, the Bobcats basketball teams will host the Regina Cougars. The women’s game is set for Friday at 18:00, followed by the men’s game at 20:00. The teams will compete again on Saturday, with the women starting at 17:00 and the men at 19:00.

Cultural events are also on the schedule. On November 22, the RD Bell Hall in the BU Music building will host a concert for Canada Music Week, beginning at 15:00. Presented by the Brandon and Westman Registered Music Teachers’ Association, the concert will showcase music students from various regions, celebrating Canadian composers. Admission is by donation.

Later in the week, on November 24, a performance titled Trio Improbable! will feature clarinetist Colin Mehmel, horn player Callie Sieverson, and pianist Danielle Guina, starting at 19:30 in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. This event is free for all attendees. Following this, on November 25, Linda Ruan, winner of the E-Gré National Music Competition, will perform at the Lorne Watson at 19:30. Tickets for this event are priced at $20 for general admission, while students from BU and the Conservatory of Music can attend for free.

Brandon University Theatre is gearing up to present a production of Mother Courage and her Children, a dark comedy with music, from December 3 to 7. Performances will take place at 19:00 from Wednesday to Saturday, with a matinee at 14:00 on Sunday at the Evans Theatre. At Assiniboine College, the Multicultural Food & Fashion Show will take place on Wednesday at 12:00, celebrating cultural diversity through food and fashion. Participants are encouraged to model their cultural attire. Further details can be found at assiniboinestudents.ca/events.

The Assiniboine Students’ Association will hold its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday from 15:45 to 17:30 in the Cafeteria Classroom at the Victoria East Campus. This meeting will provide students with insights into the association’s activities and future plans.

Additionally, the Assiniboine College Students’ Association has initiated a Food Security Initiative to support students facing food shortages. On November 20, students can participate in creating mini hampers at the ACSA Event Space/Crossroads from 11:00 to 14:00 for just $5.

Students can look forward to a festive holiday feast on December 3 and 4, featuring a buffet dinner and a dessert room filled with delicious treats. This event will highlight produce grown at Assiniboine’s North Hill campus. Tickets will be available for purchase starting November 25.

For those interested in networking, a Trades Program Mixer is scheduled for December 4 from 16:00 to 17:30 at the Mazer Group Main Street in the Len Evans Centre for Trades & Technology.

Lastly, the Cougars volleyball teams will be on the road this week, but the Women’s hockey team is set to compete against the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, at the Brandon Community Sportsplex. Game times can be found on the Assiniboine athletics website or through their social media channels.
