The opening of the new Cedar Hill Middle School in Victoria, British Columbia, has been delayed due to construction setbacks. Originally slated to welcome students on September 2, 2025, the new facility will now open at the earliest on September 4, 2025, according to the Greater Victoria School District, known as SD61.

Families were informed of the postponement last week, prompting expressions of understanding from school officials. In a statement, Deb Whitten, Superintendent of SD61, acknowledged the inconvenience and thanked families and staff for their patience during this transition. “We are very much looking forward to when it comes time for students to enter and explore the new building and ultimately have a safer, accessible, and more modern space to learn,” she said.

Construction Details and Environmental Goals

Construction of the new Cedar Hill Middle School began in November 2023 and is designed to meet the latest seismic safety codes. The project, with an estimated cost of $54 million, aims to significantly reduce its environmental impact. SD61 has stated that the new building will achieve a 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to schools that comply only with minimum building code requirements.

The new school will feature 21 classrooms and include advanced facilities such as heat pumps, a geothermal field, and solar panels. Additionally, it will provide designated spaces for art, drama, music, foods, textiles, and a skills and technology shop, alongside a gym, library, breakout learning areas, and an Indigenous Welcome Space.

The previous Cedar Hill Middle School, built in 1931, was replaced to meet modern educational needs and sustainability standards. The district emphasizes the importance of providing an updated learning environment for students that aligns with contemporary educational practices.

As the school prepares for its eventual opening, the community remains optimistic about the benefits this new facility will bring to students and families in the area.
