Concordia Education Revamps French Program to Enhance Communication Skills

Concordia Continuing Education (CCE) has redesigned its French learning program to better align with the Échelle québécoise des niveaux de compétence en français, Quebec’s official framework for assessing French language proficiency. The newly named program, French Communication Essentials, aims to improve practical communication skills across five levels, ranging from elementary to high intermediate.

Program Enhancements for Real-World Application

Previously known as French Conversation, the updated curriculum focuses on equipping learners with language skills for various contexts. Each course is structured to help participants build their proficiency in both speaking and understanding French progressively.

“We wanted to ensure our courses truly meet the needs of learners looking to improve their French communication in real contexts,” said Sherry Blok, Senior Director of Development, Executive and Professional Programs. “By aligning the program with the Échelle québécoise and collaborating closely with Réussir en français at Concordia, we created a program that is both relevant and accessible.”

The program is delivered in-person over a span of ten weeks, fostering consistent engagement in a collaborative classroom environment. This design encourages steady progression and complements in-class learning with self-directed activities that reinforce skills and prepare participants for real-world communication.

The program is also available to Concordia faculty and staff, aligning with the university’s commitment to a bilingual campus culture. Eligible faculty and staff may benefit from a tuition waiver, while students who have previously completed undergraduate or graduate courses at Concordia will receive a 10 per cent discount.
