DeKalb Event to Foster Economic Growth Through Collaboration
The DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) will host its annual breakfast event on December 2, 2023, aimed at strengthening partnerships between local colleges and businesses. The gathering will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Faranda’s, located at 302 Grove St., DeKalb. Community leaders, educators, and stakeholders are invited to connect and gain insights into regional economic momentum.
A highlight of the event will be a fireside chat titled “Collaboration and Connection in Action: Powering Economic Growth and Strengthening Communities.” Scheduled for 9:15 a.m., the discussion will feature prominent leaders from local higher education institutions, including Lisa Freeman, President of Northern Illinois University; Laurie Borowicz, President of Kishwaukee College; and Brian Knetl, President of Waubonsee Community College. The conversation will be moderated by Melissa Amedeo, the Executive Director of DCEDC.
The focus of the discussion will center on how these colleges collaborate to enhance local professional development while contributing to statewide and regional economic growth. The presidents are expected to address strategies for seizing emerging opportunities in the economy.
Amedeo emphasized the importance of investing in education at all levels. “When we invest in learning at every level, beginning with pre-Kindergarten, we have the power to create opportunities, not just for individuals, but for our entire community,” she stated. Amedeo also noted that pathways to meaningful careers, whether through four-year universities, community colleges, apprenticeship programs, or certification programs, play a crucial role in fortifying neighborhoods and ensuring long-term economic stability.
In addition to the fireside chat, Amedeo will present the organization’s annual report at 10 a.m.. This report will highlight key accomplishments and provide updates on major economic development initiatives, as well as outline priorities leading into 2026.
For those interested in attending, further information and registration details can be found on the DCEDC website at DCEDC.org/events. This event promises to be a significant opportunity for networking and collaboration among DeKalb’s educational and business communities.
