Douglas Thompson Foundation Donates $25,000 to Rotary Club After 60 Years

In a remarkable gesture of gratitude, the Douglas Thompson Foundation has donated $25,000 to the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie, a contribution that stems from a significant moment over six decades ago. This unexpected donation reflects the long-lasting impact of a $300 grant that the Rotary Club provided to Doug Thompson in 1963, enabling him to pursue his university education.

Thompson received this grant after applying to the Rotary Club for financial assistance during his studies. The club approved the request with the condition that he successfully completed his courses for that year. At the time, the sum represented a substantial financial boost, especially since annual educational expenses amounted to around $2,000.

In a recent interview, Thompson shared his feelings about the grant, recalling, “It was a serious amount at the time.” The grant proved pivotal, allowing him to study economics and ultimately embark on a successful career that included roles at Algoma Steel and later as a business owner in international steel trading.

The genesis of the recent donation was a poignant discovery: a letter from the Rotary Club tucked away in a box. This letter, signed by Ron K. MacColl, then-chairman of the youth service committee, extended best wishes to Thompson for his academic success. “I saw the letter and thought, ‘wow, this is kind of historical — I can’t believe I kept this!'” he said, laughing as he recounted the moment.

The letter’s rediscovery prompted Thompson to reflect on the support he received as a young student. He expressed his desire for the $25,000 donation to aid others facing similar financial challenges. “My mother was a widow and didn’t have a lot of money, so I’d like to see this donation go toward helping others who faced similar challenges,” Thompson explained.

In response to this generous contribution, the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie plans to allocate the funds to its scholarship program, which supports local students in pursuing their educational aspirations. This decision aligns with the club’s mission to foster community development and uplift those in need.
