Dufferin OPP Urges Caution as Students Return to School

As students in Dufferin County and much of Ontario returned to school on September 3, 2023, the local police are urging motorists to exercise caution on the roads. With school buses back in operation, the Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has emphasized the importance of remaining alert while driving, especially in school zones.
Increased Vigilance Required
The Dufferin OPP issued a statement on September 2, reminding drivers that when a school bus is stopped with its red overhead flashing lights and extended stop arm activated, all approaching vehicles must come to a complete stop. The police highlighted that this is essential for the safety of young children who are boarding or disembarking from the bus.
In addition to stopping for buses, the OPP advised drivers to be mindful of increased traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, during school hours. With more students traveling to school by various means, the likelihood of congestion in the vicinity of schools rises significantly.
Safety Measures and Penalties
To enhance road safety, the Dufferin OPP is calling on motorists to eliminate distractions and focus solely on driving. They stress the need to reduce speed in school zones and adhere to posted speed limits. Ignoring these regulations can have severe consequences, particularly in areas with heightened student activity.
The penalty for passing a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing is substantial, with fines starting at $490 along with the issuance of six demerit points. In response to a rise in complaints regarding vehicles failing to stop for school buses, the Dufferin OPP announced plans for increased patrols around school hours to enforce compliance with these laws.
Officers will be on the lookout for violations and will issue Provincial Offences Notices for failing to stop for a school bus. Convicted drivers will face not only the financial penalty but also the addition of six demerit points to their driving record.
The return to school season represents a critical time for community safety, and the Dufferin OPP is committed to ensuring that children can travel to and from school securely. Motorists are reminded to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as they navigate through busy school zones.
