Essential Back-to-School Safety Tips for Parents and Children

As the new school year begins, ensuring children’s safety during their commutes is paramount. Parents and caregivers must be proactive in educating children about safety practices, whether they walk, cycle, or take the bus to school. Former Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel, with his extensive experience in law enforcement, emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive back-to-school safety checklist.
Walking and Biking Safety Guidelines
Children walking to school should follow specific safety protocols. Parents are encouraged to establish a family walking safety rule, which includes using sidewalks whenever possible, looking both ways before crossing streets, and making eye contact with drivers. These simple actions can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.
For those who cycle, understanding the rules of the road is essential. Children should ride in single file on the right side, heading in the same direction as traffic. Weitzel advises that they should remain alert and avoid distractions while riding. Furthermore, wearing a properly fitted helmet and bright clothing can enhance visibility. Parents might consider designating specific clothing as “safety wear” for the commute to and from school.
When taking the bus, walking with children to the bus stop can reinforce these safety practices. Children should stand at least six feet from the curb and, if they need to cross in front of the bus, walk ten feet ahead to ensure they can see the driver and vice versa.
Communication and Reporting Suspicious Activity
In today’s world, equipping children with a mobile phone can be beneficial for safety. While many schools have rules against phone use during class hours, having a phone for travel can provide peace of mind. Parents should ensure their children understand how to use it responsibly.
Parents also have a role in ensuring that they stay informed. Weitzel recommends taking a recent photo of each child and keeping an updated description for emergency situations. This can be invaluable should a child go missing. Additionally, parents should inquire about their school’s emergency safety plans, which are typically available upon request.
It is crucial for children to recognize suspicious activities and report them immediately. Whether it’s an unfamiliar individual lingering around the school or a suspicious vehicle, reporting such observations can help maintain a safe environment. Weitzel stresses the importance of acting on any threats or concerning behavior. If a child hears a threat or notices a weapon, they should report it to a teacher or responsible staff member without hesitation.
Parental Involvement and Police Presence
Parents should be proactive if their child reports anything concerning. Bullying, for example, is against the law in Illinois, and it is essential that parents communicate with school officials and, if necessary, local law enforcement. Weitzel emphasizes that while not every incident results in police action, a thorough investigation can provide reassurance to parents.
During the back-to-school season, families can expect an increase in police presence around schools. Officers will be visible during drop-off and pick-up times, as well as at after-school events. The visibility of law enforcement serves as a deterrent to potential criminal activity, reinforcing the commitment to child safety.
In summary, as schools reopen, parents and children must prioritize safety. From walking and biking to bus safety, awareness and communication are vital. By implementing these strategies and staying informed, families can contribute to a safer school year. For further information or concerns, Tom Weitzel can be reached at [email protected].
