Free Transit Day Welcomes Students Back to School in Prince Albert

The City of Prince Albert is offering free transit on the first day of school, scheduled for September 2, 2024. This initiative aims to support students of all ages as they navigate their way to school, providing an opportunity to experience city transit without any cost.
Riding the bus can be a significant milestone for many children, marking their first step toward independence. While the prospect of riding alongside friends can be thrilling, concerns about bus rules or missing stops can be daunting. The city’s free transit day is designed to alleviate some of these anxieties by allowing students to familiarize themselves with the bus system.
Beginning on the first day of school, students will have the chance to travel without charge, helping them to get to their educational institutions with ease. Monthly bus passes will also be available for high school students at Carlton, St. Mary, Wesmor, and Prince Albert Collegiate Institute. Additionally, new semester bus passes can be acquired by all post-secondary students at City Hall. Students attending Saskatchewan Polytechnic can purchase their semester bus pass directly at their campus’s technical building.
According to Charlene Tebbutt, community mobility coordinator for the City of Prince Albert, “The free transit day helps students get to school, purchase their passes, and get familiar with their routes.” This initiative not only provides a practical solution for transportation but also encourages students and parents to engage with the public transit system.
In anticipation of the school year, the City of Prince Albert has also issued reminders regarding school zone safety for drivers. This includes being aware of bus stops and the presence of students traveling to and from school.
To stay informed about transit schedules and service changes, the city encourages families to subscribe to Transit News. Live tracking of city buses is available through the city’s website, ensuring that students and their families can plan their journeys effectively.
As the school year approaches, this proactive approach by the City of Prince Albert aims to facilitate a smooth transition back to school for students, making their first day a little less daunting.
