High School Students Discover Careers at Agriculture and STEM Event

On October 24, 2023, high school students in Swift Current participated in the Careers in Agriculture and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) event, designed to expose them to various career opportunities in these fields. The event, hosted at Great Plains College and the Swift Current Research and Development Centre, attracted approximately 60 students from grades 10 to 12, marking a significant increase in attendance compared to previous years.

Mackenzie Veason, Recruitment Coordinator at Great Plains College, noted that the event ran from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the college, followed by an afternoon session from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Research Centre. This marks the second consecutive year for the event, which has gained popularity, with attendance tripling from around 20 students two years ago.

The morning program at Great Plains College focused on various careers in agriculture. Representatives from several businesses, including SWT, Patterson Ag, Ag and Ex, Next Gen Seeds, and Brett Young Seeds, set up interactive booths. These setups provided students with a hands-on experience of the diverse job opportunities the agriculture sector offers. Veason emphasized the importance of conveying that a farming background is not a prerequisite for entering the agricultural industry.

In addition to industry representatives, students from the college showcased their knowledge by running booths that highlighted what they had learned through the agriculture science program. This interaction helped bridge the gap between educational programs and real-world applications in agriculture.

The afternoon session at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre allowed students to engage with various departments, including crop science, soil science, and cattle research. They had the chance to speak directly with scientists and staff, gaining insights into their work and its importance in supporting farmers and enhancing food production.

Through this hands-on approach, attendees were able to explore a wide range of career paths in both agriculture and STEM fields. The event not only aimed to inform students about potential career options but also emphasized the critical role these sectors play in global food security and sustainability.

Financial support for the event came from the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a collaborative federal-provincial-territorial initiative designed to strengthen the agricultural sector in Canada. This partnership underscores the commitment to fostering the next generation of professionals in agriculture and related fields, ensuring that students are well-informed about the opportunities that await them.

As the event concluded, it was evident that the growing interest among students highlights a promising future for careers in agriculture and STEM, paving the way for innovative solutions to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s food systems.
