Hilliardton Marsh Centre Hosts Successful Bird-Banding Event

The Hilliardton Marsh Research and Education Centre in Hilliard Township was bustling with activity during the Ontario Field Ornithologists Northern Convention held from September 19 to 21, 2023. Participants had the unique opportunity to witness the banding of an owl and observe smaller birds up close before their release.
Jacob Lachapelle, the lead bander for this season, described the gathering as an engaging experience for the attendees. Although the early morning temperatures were too low for bird-banding, activities resumed later in the day, allowing participants to appreciate the diverse avian life present at the marsh. “They are enjoying at least seeing the birds up close,” Lachapelle remarked.
Reflecting on the bird-banding season, Lachapelle noted that it has been productive overall, despite a noticeable slowdown in the past two weeks. “The month of August was phenomenal,” he stated. In that month alone, a remarkable 3,000 birds were banded, contributing to a season total of approximately 4,000 birds. This figure is comparable to last year’s totals, suggesting that while this year’s numbers may be slightly lower, it remains a commendable season for bird-banding.
Lachapelle expressed optimism regarding the outcomes of the season, emphasizing the importance of such events in promoting awareness and appreciation for local wildlife. The Hilliardton Marsh Centre continues to serve as an essential hub for ornithological research and education, fostering connections between nature enthusiasts and the rich biodiversity of the region.
As the bird-banding season concludes, the Centre looks forward to building on this year’s successes, enhancing its programs, and continuing to inspire future generations of bird watchers and conservationists.
