Join Henry Gordon for a Workshop on Artistic Critique Nov. 9
The Art Gallery of Bancroft (AGB) will host a workshop titled “the Art of the Artist’s Critique” on November 9, 2023, from 10:00 to 12:30. Led by artist Henry Melissa Gordon, the session is designed for a small group of six participants and costs $45 per person. This workshop aims to cultivate essential skills in giving and receiving critiques, allowing artists to gain fresh perspectives on their work.
Participants will engage with fellow creatives in a supportive environment, enhancing their artistic practice while overcoming barriers and discovering new directions. The workshop emphasizes the importance of constructive feedback in developing an artist’s statement and building confidence. According to the AGB’s Facebook page, the experience is not only a skill-building opportunity but also a way to foster community among artists.
Artists are encouraged to bring two to three pieces of their artwork that represent their current practice, along with a cellphone to record feedback during the critique. Molly Moldovan, a fellow artist and AGB member, highlighted the significance of this workshop, stating that it provides a unique opportunity for artists at any stage of their careers to gather and share insights.
In her comments, Moldovan noted the previous collaboration between AGB and Gordon, mentioning that she has taught workshops at the gallery and contributed to a successful exhibition of her work in 2024. She expressed enthusiasm about rekindling this partnership, emphasizing Gordon’s extensive experience in workshop facilitation and life coaching, which makes her an ideal leader for this type of event.
Gordon herself shared her excitement about the upcoming workshop, recalling her own experiences as an art student and the value of receiving critiques. “The critique is such an important tool for artists to learn and grow at any stage of their practice,” she stated. This workshop will allow participants to practice the vital skill of discerning which feedback resonates with them, fostering personal and artistic growth.
“Artists often feel stuck or lose excitement in their work,” Gordon explained. “In a group setting, we can help each other rediscover that creative flow.” She believes that the workshop will not only enhance individual skills but also strengthen community ties, creating a supportive network of artists.
The AGB is primarily volunteer-run and has played a crucial role in the North Hastings visual arts scene for many years. Gordon expressed her gratitude for the gallery’s contributions and encouraged others to get involved. “There are many volunteer opportunities at the AGB, from small to substantial roles, and each one is vital to our community,” she said.
For those interested in participating in the workshop, registration can be completed through the AGB’s Facebook page or by visiting their official website. If the workshop reaches full capacity, a second date may be added to accommodate additional participants.
