Kamloops Mounties Urge Drivers to Exercise Caution as School Year Begins

Students have returned to classrooms across Kamloops, prompting local authorities to issue a reminder to drivers in the area to exercise caution in school zones. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Kamloops emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits and remaining vigilant while driving during school hours.
Cpl. Dana Napier of the Kamloops RCMP stated that school zones are in effect from Monday to Friday, between 08:00 and 17:00. She urged drivers to allow themselves additional time during morning commutes, reinforcing the need to anticipate unexpected situations, such as children unexpectedly crossing streets.
To further promote awareness, temporary reader boards will be installed in various school zones throughout the city. According to Cpl. Napier, these boards aim to remind drivers of the importance of slowing down and paying close attention to their surroundings. “We’re bringing awareness to school zones,” she said, emphasizing that drivers must comply with speed limits and remain vigilant.
Statistics from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) highlight the dangers associated with school travel. Each year, an average of two children are killed, and approximately 38 are injured while walking or cycling to school in B.C.’s Southern Interior. Cpl. Napier reiterated that police presence in school zones will be heightened throughout the school year to ensure safety. Drivers who violate traffic regulations, including speeding, will face penalties.
As the school year progresses, the Kamloops RCMP remains committed to enhancing safety measures and fostering a secure environment for students as they travel to and from school.
