Lethbridge Institutions See Total Enrolment Decline Despite Domestic Surge

Both Lethbridge Polytechnic and the University of Lethbridge have reported a decline in total enrolment numbers for the 2023 academic year, despite an increase in domestic student registrations. This trend raises questions about the overall attractiveness of post-secondary education in the region.
At Lethbridge Polytechnic, total enrolment has decreased by approximately 5% compared to the previous year. Although the institution has welcomed a notable rise in domestic students, the overall figures reflect a shift in international enrolment. The institution’s administration emphasized the importance of attracting a diverse student body, which has become increasingly challenging.
Similarly, the University of Lethbridge has experienced a decline in enrolment, with a reported drop of 3.5% from last year. Despite the rise in domestic applications, particularly from local high schools, the total number of students enrolled has not met expectations. This discrepancy highlights the impact of changing global circumstances on international student recruitment.
Challenges Facing Lethbridge’s Educational Institutions
Both institutions have pointed to various factors contributing to the decline in overall enrolment. The ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to influence international student mobility, with many prospective students reconsidering their educational plans. Additionally, shifts in immigration policies and visa regulations in Canada may have deterred potential international applicants from pursuing studies in Lethbridge.
“We are committed to enhancing our recruitment strategies to ensure that we can attract a diverse range of students from various backgrounds,” said Dr. Nancy McCann, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Lethbridge Polytechnic. “While we are pleased to see more domestic students, we recognize the need to boost our international enrolment.”
The situation also reflects broader trends in the Canadian education sector. According to the Canadian Bureau for International Education, the number of international students in Canada had begun to decline in various regions as institutions contend with increased competition from global education markets.
Future Strategies and Opportunities
Both universities are taking proactive measures to address these challenges. The University of Lethbridge plans to enhance its outreach efforts to potential international students, focusing on the advantages of studying in Alberta. This includes highlighting the quality of education and the benefits of living in a multicultural environment.
Lethbridge Polytechnic is also exploring new partnerships with international schools and organizations. These partnerships aim to facilitate student exchanges and promote awareness of the institution’s programs worldwide.
The emphasis on domestic students has provided a temporary buffer against these challenges. However, both institutions are aware of the necessity to maintain a balanced enrolment strategy that includes a robust international presence to secure their long-term viability.
As the 2023 academic year progresses, Lethbridge Polytechnic and the University of Lethbridge remain focused on adapting their strategies to meet the evolving needs of students. By fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for both domestic and international students, they aim to strengthen their position in the competitive landscape of higher education.
