On Wednesday, the new academic year commenced for the majority of school divisions in Manitoba. According to a list provided by the provincial government, this marks a significant return to classrooms for students across the province. A total of 22 school divisions, including the Winnipeg School Division, welcomed students back, sparking enthusiasm and anticipation among educators and families alike.

Teachers Prepare for a New Year

“There’s so much excitement in the air,” stated Ara Morris, principal of Sargent Park School. Morris noted that teachers have been preparing for several weeks, ensuring classrooms are ready for the influx of students. “It’s fun at the beginning of the year,” she added, reflecting on the vibrant atmosphere as students return.

For the remaining 14 school divisions, classes are set to begin on Thursday or Friday, while the Swan Valley School Division will start on Monday. The staggered schedule allows schools to prepare adequately for their students’ arrival and ensure a smooth transition back into the academic environment.

Fostering a Welcoming Environment

At Sargent Park School, the approach to welcoming students is both innovative and personal. Anna Manila, a Grade 1 and 2 teacher, engages students right at her classroom door. Each morning, she offers a selection of greetings for students to choose from, such as a morning hug, a high-five, or a wave. “It helps build community. It helps make them feel safe and seen and welcome,” Manila explained. This practice is designed to create a nurturing atmosphere that encourages students to start their day positively.

Students like Shane, who also serves as a crossing guard at the school, expressed their excitement about returning. “I’m most excited about the opportunity that I can get to make more friends, and also to see my friends that I didn’t really get to see during summer break,” he shared, highlighting the social aspect of the school experience.

This renewed focus on community and connection is essential as students adapt back to the classroom setting. Teachers and school staff are dedicated to ensuring that the transition is smooth and that students feel supported as they embark on a new academic journey.

As the school year unfolds, the emphasis remains on creating an engaging and inclusive environment for all students in Manitoba, where learning can thrive and friendships can flourish.
