McGill University Drops in Global Rankings, Remains in Top 50
Montreal’s McGill University has experienced a decline in the latest global university rankings, as it was placed at #41 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. Despite this drop from #34 in the previous year’s rankings, McGill remains one of Canada’s top three institutions, demonstrating its continued presence among the world’s elite universities.
The comprehensive ranking evaluated 2,191 universities across 115 countries. The University of Toronto retains its position as Canada’s highest-ranked university, advancing to #21, while the University of British Columbia (UBC) follows closely at #45. Toronto’s performance has been bolstered by its strong scores in areas such as research quality and international outlook.
McGill University has been commended for its research environment and teaching performance. According to its profile on Times Higher Education, approximately 29% of its 30,000 students come from outside Canada, making it one of the most internationally diverse campuses in the country. The university also boasts a student-to-staff ratio of around 12 to 1, with women comprising just over 60% of the student population.
Academic Strengths and Global Standing
McGill excels particularly in psychology, medicine, and law, ranking among the world’s top 35 in each field. Additionally, it holds strong positions in life sciences and engineering. These academic strengths contribute to Montreal’s reputation as a premier student city globally, despite the recent drop in rankings.
When comparing the rankings, last year saw McGill at #34, indicating a notable decline in the latest evaluation. In contrast, the University of Toronto improved its standing from #24 to #21.
Globally, the University of Oxford has maintained its position as the top university for the tenth consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second place. Princeton University tied with the University of Cambridge for third place.
While McGill’s drop in rankings may be disappointing for alumni, the university still outperforms hundreds of prestigious institutions worldwide. It remains the highest-ranked university in Quebec, reinforcing its vital role in the region’s educational landscape.
