Medicine Hat Hosts Nighttime Moth Study Event for Nature Enthusiasts

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is set to host a unique nighttime event focusing on the study of moths. Scheduled for September 27, 2023, participants will have the opportunity to explore various methods for attracting, catching, and identifying different species of moths. This engaging activity will take place in the Kensington neighborhood, beginning at 9 p.m. and concluding at 10:30 p.m.
During the event, attendees will learn about the significance of moths in the ecosystem from park interpreter Genevieve Mathieu. She stated, “We will be meeting at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, to set up the traps and talk about moths and the role that they play in the ecosystem.” Participants will utilize a range of live traps and techniques to enhance their understanding of these fascinating nocturnal creatures.
As the event has limited spots available, interested individuals are encouraged to register in advance. A nominal fee of $5 per person will be charged to help cover the costs associated with the equipment. Those wishing to participate can secure their place by calling the nature line at 403-529-6225.
This initiative not only aims to educate attendees about moths but also highlights the importance of engaging with nature and understanding the biodiversity in local ecosystems. The Medicine Hat Interpretive Program continues to offer diverse opportunities for community involvement and learning about the natural world.
