Midland Activates Speed Traps to Enhance School Zone Safety

Speed traps will be activated in Midland as students prepare to return to school, aiming to enhance safety around educational institutions and community zones. The initiative is set to launch on September 2, coinciding with the start of the school year.
Mayor Bill Gordon announced that the current ‘Coming Soon’ signage will soon be replaced with ‘In Use’ signs to inform motorists of the new measures. “We must display these ‘in use’ signs while the cameras are capturing data,” Gordon stated, urging drivers to adhere to the 40 km/h speed limit in school zones.
The town has installed two speed cameras: one on Yonge Street in front of Mundy’s Bay Public School and another on William Street in front of Sacred Heart Catholic School. These cameras will operate continuously, monitoring traffic 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Violators exceeding the speed limit will receive fines, although these penalties will not carry demerit points. Tickets will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle, ensuring that law enforcement can effectively manage speeding in these critical areas.
Midland’s commitment to road safety reflects broader efforts across various communities to protect children and pedestrians, especially during peak school times. As the school term approaches, local authorities emphasize the importance of safe driving habits to foster a secure environment for all.
