NDP Leadership Candidates Enhance French Skills Ahead of Debate
OTTAWA – The candidates vying for leadership of the New Democratic Party (NDP) are actively enhancing their French language skills in preparation for their first debate scheduled for November 27, 2025, in Montreal. With Canada’s two official languages, the ability to communicate effectively in French is seen as crucial for any leader aiming to unite and represent a national party.
The leadership contenders include documentarian Avi Lewis, Alberta MP Heather McPherson, union leader Rob Ashton, social worker Tanille Johnston, and organic farmer Tony McQuail. Each candidate possesses varying degrees of proficiency in French, but none have claimed to be fully bilingual. This recognition of the need to improve their language skills reflects the candidates’ commitment to leading a party that thrives in both English and French-speaking regions.
During a recent NDP leadership forum, Lewis briefly responded to a question in French. A spokesperson for his campaign noted that his language skills are still developing, stating he is “not fully bilingual.” This admission highlights the challenges the candidates face as they seek to connect with voters in Quebec, where strong French language capabilities are often essential for garnering support.
Karl Belanger, a former strategist for the NDP, emphasized the importance of language proficiency for the next party leader. He noted that without strong French skills, building a broad base of support in Quebec could prove difficult. “The next leader will need to engage with Quebec voters effectively,” Belanger stated, reflecting the sentiments of many within the party.
The upcoming debate in Montreal represents not only a platform for the candidates to present their visions but also an opportunity to demonstrate their language skills. The candidates are expected to engage in discussions that resonate with a diverse electorate, highlighting their policies and approaches on various issues.
As the debate approaches, the emphasis on language acquisition underscores the candidates’ awareness of the linguistic landscape in Canada. Their efforts to improve their French skills may play a significant role in shaping the dynamics of the leadership race and the future direction of the NDP.
