New Bookable Pods Enhance Study Options at Guildford Library

The Guildford public library in Surrey has introduced three new bookable pods, providing individuals and small groups with modern spaces for studying, video calls, content creation, and collaborative work. These pods are designed to offer quiet environments, addressing community needs for focused workspaces, as outlined in a recent statement from Surrey Libraries.
These sound-dampened pods are part of a pilot project aimed at enhancing library services. If successful, they may be rolled out to other branches in the Surrey Libraries system. According to the library’s announcement, the initiative directly responds to requests for more quiet areas conducive to concentration and creativity.
The pods can serve as low-sensory spaces, ideal for those who may feel overwhelmed by noise or bright lights. They are also suitable for activities that require a high level of focus, such as taking tests. Users can reserve a pod for up to two hours per day, with bookings available either in person at the library service desk or by calling 604-598-7366.
Two of the pods are specifically designed for individual use and feature height-adjustable tables. The third pod accommodates up to four people, catering to both solitary study and group activities.
“This is such an exciting addition to our services,” said Dr. Balbir Gurm, chair of the board of trustees for Surrey Libraries. “We know how important it is for people to have access to quiet, flexible spaces in our libraries, whether they’re students, remote workers, or creators. We’re so grateful to our generous donors who made this possible.”
The Guildford public library is located at 15105 105 Ave., boasting 35,300 square feet of space across two floors. The facility offers free parking for up to three hours and features an Assistive Technology Station. This station includes a height-adjustable desk, large-print keyboard, and specialized software such as JAWS screen reading software and Zoomtext magnifier and reader.
In addition to its new pods, the library hosts a variety of events throughout the week. These activities include drop-in chess, an English conversation program, family storytime with Duplo, an adult writers group, and technology assistance sessions. Upcoming family movie screenings, such as Mufasa: The Lion King on September 28, are also part of the library’s offerings. The introduction of these pods highlights the library’s commitment to evolving its services in response to community needs, showcasing the vital role of public libraries in supporting education and creativity.
