PAGC’s Annual Event Equips 1,500 Students with Back-to-School Essentials

On August 30, 2023, the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) hosted its annual back-to-school event at the PAGC Urban Services Centre, benefiting approximately 1,500 students. This initiative aimed to alleviate financial stress for families by providing essential school supplies and additional support services.
The event attracted hundreds of families, who gathered to receive not only backpacks filled with school supplies but also complimentary haircuts and meals. Organizers collaborated with various community agencies and businesses to create a welcoming atmosphere for students preparing to start the school year.
Empowering Students for Success
Melissa Hennecu, PAGC’s labour force development coordinator, emphasized the initiative’s significance. “Just to help kids start the school year off in a positive way and give them the essentials they need,” she stated. The focus on equipping students with confidence is a core aspect of the program. Hennecu remarked on the transformation she witnessed, saying, “Seeing kids walk in shy with their hoodies up and leave smiling after a haircut is the most exciting part for me.”
This year, the event marked a significant expansion from its early days. Hennecu recalled, “The first time we did it at Parkland Hall, we had two or three hairdressers and gave out maybe 400 backpacks. Now, we have 1,000 backpacks for elementary students and 500 binders for high school students.” The rising costs of living have made such support crucial for many households. Hennecu added, “Even just your basic school supplies list is very costly for any family, so it’s nice to be able to give back and help out a little bit.”
Vincent Brittain, the Urban Services Director and former classroom teacher, shared his perspective on the importance of the event. “When they come into school, they’re prepared, they’re happy, they’re proud to receive the proper tools to succeed in their educational journey,” he explained. The initiative not only eases back-to-school costs for families but also supports teachers who sometimes purchase supplies out of their own pockets.
A Community Effort
Looking ahead, Brittain mentioned plans for a mental health symposium scheduled for September 25, 2023. This initiative aims to further enhance the range of services available to students and families. “We’re here to support you in any way possible to ensure your educational journey is a success,” he concluded.
The PAGC’s annual back-to-school event exemplifies community resilience and support, ensuring that students can start the school year equipped with confidence and essential supplies.
