Palma School Unveils Renovated Gymnasium After $2.5 Million Gift

Palma School has officially unveiled its renovated Edward M. Dowd Gymnasium following a transformative $2.5 million gift. This significant donation arrives at a crucial time for the institution, which is set to return to coeducational enrollment in 2024 after having been an all-male school since 1964. The renovation symbolizes not only a modernized campus but also reflects the evolving identity of Palma School.
Chris Dalman, President of Palma School, expressed the importance of this gift. “We tell our students that everything here is a gift. The Edward M. Dowd Gymnasium is now one of our greatest gifts—one they will cherish, care for, and one day, when possible, pay forward.” The gymnasium serves as a vital space where students create memories, develop character, and foster a sense of community.
With the recent upgrades, the gymnasium is positioned to accommodate the needs of Palma’s expanding coeducational student body. “Palma’s gym never sleeps,” Dalman noted. “It has been the heart of our campus for decades—hosting practices, championships, dances, rallies, graduations, and moments that shape who our students become. To now hear young women’s voices competing, laughing, and cheering ‘Go Palma’ is our new reality, and we are better for it.”
The renovation also honors the values of its namesake, Edward M. Dowd, a self-made man whose life exemplified perseverance and generosity. Dowd’s philanthropic efforts have considerably impacted education, healthcare, and community programs in both Monterey and Santa Clara counties. “After graduating from Palma, Ed enlisted in the Air Force. When he returned four years later, he shared with me the three key lessons he took from military service: respect the chain of command, value the perspectives of others, and practice the discipline required to stay focused every day,” said Jim Dowd, President and CEO of the Edward M. Dowd Foundation. He added that these principles were foundational to Ed’s success.
This milestone event is part of Palma Rising, the school’s ambitious $12 million campaign aimed at modernizing its athletic facilities. This includes plans for a new 9,500-square-foot athletic performance center, which will expand opportunities for all students.
The Edward M. Dowd Foundation continues to uphold the legacy of its founder, focusing on advancing education, health, and social causes that create lasting community impact. Established by Edward M. Dowd, the foundation remains dedicated to philanthropy and the values of service and generosity.
As Palma School embraces this new chapter, the renovated gymnasium stands as a testament to the institution’s commitment to growth, inclusivity, and excellence—values that will shape the lives of its students for generations to come.
