Remembering Irena Peritz: A Life of Resilience and Compassion
Irena Peritz, a beloved figure known for her warmth and wisdom, passed away at the age of 98 last week. Her son-in-law, Josh Freed, reflects on her remarkable life, marked by resilience, compassion, and an unwavering spirit.
Born in Poland, Irena was a Holocaust survivor who faced unimaginable hardships during her childhood. From ages 11 to 16, she and her family evaded the Nazis, enduring harrowing experiences that shaped her outlook on life. Irena often recounted the moment she emerged from hiding, expressing in her diary the overwhelming feeling of freedom: “I have nothing, but I have everything — my life.”
A Legacy of Inspiration and Connection
Despite her traumatic past, Irena radiated positivity and became an inspiration to many. Her daughter, Ingrid Freed, delivered a heartfelt eulogy, highlighting Irena’s journey from darkness to a life filled with light and gratitude. “She never lost her gratitude for simply being alive when so many others had perished,” Ingrid remarked, encapsulating the essence of her mother’s spirit.
Irena’s community engagement was extensive. She participated in various activities, including hiking, tai chi, and choir, remaining active well into her 80s. Her enthusiasm inspired younger generations, often leading them to step aside on mountain trails to let her pass, showcasing the respect she garnered along her journeys.
Her impact extended beyond physical activities. As her grandson Jonathon Freed shared during the funeral, Irena had an extraordinary ability to connect with others. “You almost had to make a reservation to see her,” he noted, emphasizing how busy she was making friends in her later years.
A Unique Presence in the Community
In her 90s, Irena established an unofficial office on a bench in Westmount Park, where friends and strangers alike would seek her advice. She was known for her compassionate listening and insightful questions, making everyone who approached her feel valued and understood.
Irena’s social circles included her four grandsons, who often found themselves discussing their lives with her. Even after breakups, former girlfriends inquired about her, highlighting the profound impact she had on those around her.
Freed recalls the weekly tennis nights where Irena was a central figure. Despite her age, she eagerly joined the group, bringing joy and camaraderie to the game. “If she didn’t show by 19:15, everyone would ask, ‘Where’s Irena?’” he shared, underscoring her significance to the gathering.
In recent months, Irena’s responsibilities shifted as she took on the role of bingo caller at her seniors’ residence, occasionally missing tennis games. Yet, her presence remained felt, as many players would stop by her bench just to chat, a testament to her enduring charm.
As Freed reminisces, he acknowledges the void her passing has created: “Without Irena, the Wednesday game is going to lose some of its sparkle.”
Irena Peritz was not only a survivor but a teacher, imparting lessons on resilience, gratitude, and the power of human connection. Her life exemplified the idea that, even from the deepest darkness, one can find light. The empty bench in Westmount Park will serve as a poignant reminder of her legacy and the love she shared with all who knew her.
