Saanich and Victoria Police Reintroduce School Liaison Program

The Saanich and Victoria police departments are set to reintroduce their school liaison program in schools across the Greater Victoria area following a two-year hiatus. This initiative aims to enhance the safety and well-being of students by providing tailored support to meet the unique needs of individual schools.
The program will be staffed by designated school liaison officers who will engage with students, staff, and parents to foster positive relationships and address concerns within the school community. According to Saanich Police Officer Jason Muir, these officers are capable of catering to the specific requirements of each school, ensuring that their approach is relevant and effective.
Addressing Community Needs
The decision to reinstate the program comes after careful consideration of the challenges schools have faced during the pandemic. Both police departments are committed to prioritizing student safety and supporting mental health initiatives. This program aligns with their broader strategy to build trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
The collaboration between the Saanich and Victoria police departments highlights a growing recognition of the importance of proactive measures in schools. Officer Muir emphasized that the role of school liaison officers extends beyond law enforcement; they serve as mentors and resources for students navigating various challenges.
Building Positive Relationships
The liaison officers will participate in various school activities, including workshops and events, to strengthen their presence and establish rapport with students. This proactive engagement is designed to create a safe environment where students feel comfortable discussing issues and seeking help.
In a statement, Victoria Police Chief Del Manak expressed enthusiasm for the program’s return, noting its potential to make a significant impact on student lives. “We believe that by building strong relationships with students and staff, we can foster a culture of safety and support in our schools,” he said.
The reintroduction of this program not only aims to address immediate safety concerns but also focuses on creating a long-term support system for students. With the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic, having dedicated officers in schools is expected to provide essential resources for mental health and well-being.
As the program rolls out, both police departments will monitor its effectiveness and gather feedback from school communities to ensure it meets their evolving needs. The collaboration marks a significant step towards enhancing safety and support in education settings across the Greater Victoria region.
The reintroduction of the school liaison program reflects a broader trend towards integrating community resources in educational environments, ultimately benefiting students and fostering a sense of security within schools.
