Saskatchewan Polytechnic Students Raise $1,600 for Healthcare Foundation

Students from the Business Management program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic successfully organized a bake sale on March 6, 2024, raising $1,600 for the Boreal Healthcare Foundation. This event, titled “Bake for a Cause,” transformed a routine class assignment into a community-focused fundraising effort held in the campus cafeteria.

The initiative was part of a project management course that required students to develop and execute a project aimed at raising funds for a charitable cause. Vikas Singh, the project manager, explained that the concept emerged early in the semester and involved months of planning and preparation. “We had to raise at least $1,000 for any foundation, and we chose to donate to the Boreal Healthcare Foundation,” Singh said. Planning commenced in September, and the students faced challenges in dividing tasks, securing permissions, and arranging sponsorships.

The team anticipated raising around $1,500 but exceeded their goal, contributing to a class-wide target of $2,000. Singh noted that approximately 90 percent of the staff participated, purchasing baked goods and donating significantly beyond their purchases.

Students Gain Real-World Experience

Instructor Nicole Galbraith emphasized that the fundraiser is integral to the curriculum, allowing students to experience all five phases of project management while benefiting the community. “We can still give back to our community, and instead of retaining revenue, all proceeds are donated to a charity in Prince Albert,” Galbraith stated. She also commended the students for their professionalism and dedication throughout the planning process.

The event attracted Andy Cohen, the Boreal Healthcare Foundation’s donor engagement and communications representative. He highlighted the significance of the students’ efforts, noting that every contribution aids in improving healthcare services in Prince Albert and surrounding northern communities. “The foundation has been investing in local healthcare for the last 40 years,” Cohen remarked. “Every little bit helps, looking to equip the hospital that our provincial government has helped us build so far.”

Cohen also pointed out that student initiatives like this increase awareness for the foundation’s ongoing campaigns, including the “Equip the Vic” initiative. He noted the importance of engaging the community as the region prepares for expanded healthcare services, including the introduction of the first MRI machine north of Saskatoon.

Personal Growth and Community Impact

As the bake sale concluded, Singh reflected on the meaningful experience for all involved. “This is our first time in Canada, and it was a new experience for us, as we haven’t done anything like this back in India,” he said. “It was an amazing experience, and we learned so many things from organizing this event.”

The successful fundraiser not only achieved its financial goals but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration among students, staff, and local organizations, showcasing the positive impact of student-led initiatives in enhancing healthcare accessibility in the region.
