A program providing free menstrual products in Saskatchewan schools has been renewed, with support from both Shoppers Drug Mart and the provincial government. This initiative, which has distributed products to over 670 schools during the past two and a half years, aims to ensure accessibility for women and girls who require these essential items.

The partnership will see Shoppers Drug Mart donate 12 million menstrual products over the next three years. This effort not only addresses practical needs but also seeks to reduce stress and embarrassment associated with accessing menstrual products. By increasing availability, the program contributes to improved student attendance and overall well-being.

Commitment to Women’s Health

According to an official statement from the provincial government, the initiative is a vital step in supporting women’s health in educational environments. David Marwell, the interim president of Shoppers Drug Mart, emphasized the company’s long-standing commitment to such issues. “Shoppers has been focused on women’s health issues for the last 11 years, and this is clearly one that impacts all women; it’s something that we’re very proud to support and be a part of,” he stated.

Shoppers Drug Mart also operates similar programs in other provinces, including Manitoba, Ontario, and Newfoundland, highlighting a broader commitment to improving access to menstrual products across Canada. Each school participating in the program features informative stickers placed on mirrors in washrooms, directing students to locations where menstrual products can be found.

The renewed program represents a significant collaboration aimed at addressing a critical area of health and education. By facilitating access to menstrual products, both Shoppers Drug Mart and the Saskatchewan government are making strides in ensuring that all students can enjoy a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
