Shawna Mozdzen Takes Office as New Ward 1 School Trustee
Shawna Mozdzen was officially sworn in as the new school trustee for Ward 1 during a special meeting of the Brandon School Division board of trustees on the evening of October 16. The ceremony marked the beginning of her term following a decisive victory in the recent byelection.
Formal Ceremony and Oath of Office
During the swearing-in ceremony, held at the board’s headquarters, Mozdzen raised her right hand and solemnly affirmed her commitment to “faithfully perform her duties and uphold the trustee code of ethics.” The ceremony was conducted by Denis Labossiere, the secretary-treasurer, who also oversaw the signing of official documents in compliance with the Public Schools Act.
After her swearing-in, Mozdzen expressed enthusiasm about her new role. “I’d like to get started and just work as a board — bring everyone together at the same table and come to great decisions as a board,” she stated, highlighting her collaborative approach.
Campaign Success and Priorities
Mozdzen’s campaign resonated with voters, as she garnered 2,229 votes, accounting for 56.7 percent of the total ballots cast. This victory placed her well ahead of six other candidates, including Henry Sieklicki, Laura Armitage, Michael Grantham, Bonnie-Lynn Mills, and Eren Oleson. The election saw a total of 3,929 votes, with 596 of those coming from advance polls and sealed ballots.
In her campaign, Mozdzen emphasized the importance of creating a supportive and inclusive educational environment for students and families. “Just have my voice heard and speak to what I believe in, like I always do, and just try to do everything that’s right for the students and staff,” she declared, outlining her priorities as she embarks on her new responsibilities.
As a school support and educational assistant, Mozdzen brings valuable experience to her role on the board. Her commitment to advocating for the needs of students and staff is expected to play a significant role in guiding the Brandon School Division in the upcoming years.
With her official start, Mozdzen aims to foster a collaborative atmosphere within the board, ensuring that the voices of all stakeholders are heard as they work towards enhancing the educational landscape in the community.
