The **Somonauk Public Library** is set to kick off its winter programming with a variety of engaging activities for children starting on **January 2, 2024**. The highlight of the month is the **Kids Winter Reading Challenge**, which invites young readers to embark on a fun winter adventure. Registration for this challenge is available at the library’s front desk.
Winter Programs for Young Readers
In addition to the reading challenge, the library offers several programs designed to support early literacy and creativity. The **Tot Tales** program, aimed at children up to age 3, introduces little ones to songs, rhymes, hand motions, and books. This program takes place weekly on **Wednesdays at 11 a.m.** throughout January, specifically on the **7th, 14th, 21st,** and **28th**. Registration is required for participation.
Another exciting option for children ages 3 to 6 is **Stories & Crafts for Little Ones**. This program is scheduled for **January 15** at **11 a.m.** and **January 20** at **4 p.m.** Also requiring registration, it combines storytelling with hands-on craft activities.
For those looking for a creative outlet, the **All Day Drop-In Craft for Kids** invites children aged 3 and up to explore their artistic side on **Saturday, January 10**. This event will take place in the Children’s Programming Room, allowing kids to take a break from the cold while engaging in crafts.
Unique Opportunities to Engage with Animals and Literature
The library will also host **Paws For Reading**, a program designed for children in grades 1 through 5. Participants can spend time reading to certified **Fox Valley Therapy dogs** in 15-minute sessions on **January 22 at 4 p.m.** Registration is required for this unique opportunity.
For older children aged 6 to 10, the **Chapter Club** provides a platform to discuss selected books and participate in related activities. This club meets on **January 26 at 6:30 p.m.**, with registration necessary and copies of the books available at the front desk.
On **January 31 at 2 p.m.**, the library will host a **Family Movie Day**, allowing families to enjoy a film together in a cozy setting.
For tweens and teens aged 10 to 17, the library offers several exciting initiatives. Participants can sign up for **Tween/Teen Take Home Book Boxes**, which include up to two library books, a treat, and other goodies. Registration is required, with pick-up scheduled from **January 5 to 10**.
