The Somonauk Public Library is set to engage young readers with a variety of programs and activities this January, starting with a winter reading challenge that begins on January 2, 2024. Children can sign up at the front desk to embark on a fun winter adventure that encourages reading and exploration.

Weekly Programs for Young Children

Among the library’s offerings is the Tots Tales program, designed for children up to the age of three. This weekly session, held every Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. on January 7, 14, 21, and 28, introduces babies and toddlers to an engaging mix of songs, rhymes, hand motions, and books. Registration is required for participation.

For slightly older children, the Stories & Crafts for Little Ones program will meet at 11:00 a.m. on January 15 and 4:00 p.m. on January 20. This initiative is aimed at children aged three to six, providing a fun environment for storytelling and creative activities. Registration is also a requirement for this program.

Additionally, the library will host an All Day Drop-In Craft session on January 10, inviting children aged three and older to escape the winter chill and immerse themselves in craft-making activities in the Children’s Programming Room.

Reading and Creative Opportunities for Older Children

The Paws For Reading program offers a unique opportunity for children in grades one through five to read to trained therapy dogs from Fox Valley. Scheduled for January 22 at 4:00 p.m., participants can enjoy 15-minute reading sessions, which require prior registration.

For children between the ages of six and ten, the library introduces the Chapter Club. This gathering will take place on January 26 at 6:30 p.m., where participants can discuss a selected book and engage in related activities. Interested children should collect copies of the reading materials at the front desk ahead of time.

Family engagement is also a focus, with a Family Movie Day set for January 31 at 2:00 p.m.. This event promises to be an enjoyable outing for families looking to enjoy a movie together.

For older kids aged ten to seventeen, the library will provide Tween/Teen Take Home Book Boxes. Participants can pick up these boxes filled with up to two library books, a treat, and additional surprises from January 5-10. Registration is necessary, and spots are limited.

Creative and Fun Workshops

The library is also offering a Vision Board Workshop for tweens and teens on January 5 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.. This workshop invites participants to create a vision board for the new year, with all materials provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring personal pictures to incorporate into their boards.

On January 19, a Cocoa and Crafts session will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., where attendees can create faux stained glass artworks while enjoying hot chocolate and cookies. Limited spots are available, so early registration is recommended.

Lastly, the Tween/Teen Cozy Coloring Club will meet on January 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.. Participants can relax in their coziest attire while coloring and enjoying soothing music. The library provides all necessary materials, but registration is required.

Additionally, Tech Help sessions with Steve Goodwin will be available from January 7-22, offering 20-minute time slots for those needing assistance with technology. Finally, on January 22 at 6:00 p.m., the library will host a Cards with Karen event where participants can make handmade Valentine cards, with all supplies included for a fee of $5.

With a diverse range of programs aimed at fostering literacy and creativity, the Somonauk Public Library is poised to make this winter an enriching experience for children and families in the community.
