Somonauk Library Launches Winter Reading Challenge for Kids

The Somonauk Public Library is inviting children to participate in a winter reading challenge that begins on January 2, 2024. This initiative aims to engage young readers and foster a love for literature during the chilly winter months. Children can sign up at the front desk for this exciting winter adventure.

In addition to the reading challenge, the library has planned various programs throughout January to cater to different age groups. “Tot Tales,” designed for children up to age 3, introduces songs, rhymes, and books to babies and toddlers. This program will take place weekly at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, specifically on January 7, 14, 21, and 28. Registration is required for participation.

Engaging Activities for Young Readers

For children aged 3 to 6, the library offers “Stories & Crafts for Little Ones” on January 15 at 11 a.m. and January 20 at 4 p.m.. This program requires registration to ensure adequate supplies for all participants. On January 10, kids aged 3 and above can enjoy an “All Day Drop-In Craft for Kids” in the Children’s Programming Room, providing a creative outlet to escape the winter chill.

A unique opportunity for children in grades 1 through 5 is the “Paws For Reading” event, where participants can read to Fox Valley Therapy dogs. This heartwarming activity will occur on January 22 at 4 p.m. and requires registration.

Another engaging option is the “Chapter Club,” tailored for children aged 6 to 10. This club will meet on January 26 at 6:30 p.m. for discussions on selected books and related activities. Interested participants can pick up copies of the featured books at the front desk, with registration necessary.

Special Events and Workshops

The library is also organizing a “Family Movie Day” on January 31 at 2 p.m., providing families with a cozy afternoon option. For older children and teens aged 10 to 17, the library will offer “Tween/Teen Take Home Book Boxes” from January 5-10. These boxes will include up to two library books, a treat, and other surprises. Registration is required, and spots are limited.

On January 5, a “Vision Board Workshop for Tweens/Teens” will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., allowing participants to create vision boards for the upcoming year. All materials will be provided, though attendees are encouraged to bring their own pictures.

For a fun winter craft night, “Cocoa and Crafts for Tweens/Teens” featuring faux stained glass will be hosted on January 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided, but registration is required due to limited spots.

Finally, the “Tween/Teen Cozy Coloring Club” will offer a relaxing night of coloring and conversation on January 29 at 6:30 p.m.. All necessary materials will be supplied, but registration is essential.

In addition to these activities, the library will provide “Tech Help with Steve Goodwin” from January 7-22. Participants can sign up for a 20-minute session from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.. Lastly, “Cards with Karen” will be held on January 22 at 6 p.m., where attendees can create handmade Valentine cards for a small fee of $5, with all supplies included.
