Students Settle into Campus Life at MacEwan University

On September 1, 2023, approximately 600 students moved into their residences at MacEwan University in downtown Edmonton. This significant day marks the beginning of a new academic year as students acclimatize to their campus environment.
Orientation Events Designed to Build Community
To facilitate a smooth transition, the university’s residence life department has organized nine orientation events over the next few days. These activities aim to help students connect with their peers and become familiar with campus life. Events include a campfire gathering, laser tag, a pub night, and excursions to local attractions such as the zoo and Ikea.
“There will be a lot of opportunities for people to make friends and get to know their neighbours,” said Shreeta Panchmatia, the residence life manager at MacEwan University. She emphasized the importance of building community among new residents, noting that her team of 24 staff members will actively engage with students, encouraging them to meet their roommates and make new connections.
Support from Resident Assistants
Resident assistants play a critical role in this process, offering guidance and information about the various programs MacEwan offers. They are tasked with not only helping students settle in but also ensuring that they are aware of the resources available to them throughout their university experience. The combination of structured events and personal outreach from staff aims to create a welcoming environment for all.
As students embark on this new chapter, the university’s efforts to foster community spirit and support will be instrumental in helping them navigate the challenges of university life. The orientation events are designed to ease the transition and promote lasting friendships, setting a positive tone for the academic year ahead.
