Students at MacEwan University in downtown Edmonton officially moved into their residence halls on September 1, 2023. Approximately 600 students began settling into their new living spaces, marking the start of their academic journey.

To foster a sense of community, resident assistants are playing a pivotal role in helping students understand the various programs offered at the university. Over the next few days, the residence life department plans to host nine orientation events designed to help newcomers connect with their peers. These activities include a campfire gathering, laser tag, a pub night, and excursions to the zoo and Ikea.

Shreeta Panchmatia, the residence life manager at MacEwan, emphasized the importance of these events, stating, “(There will be) a lot of opportunities for people to make friends and get to know their neighbours.” Her dedicated team of 24 staff members will actively engage with students, knocking on doors to encourage them to socialize with their roommates and fellow residents.

The university’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment is evident in its approach to orientation. With a variety of events planned, students will have multiple platforms to interact and build friendships, enhancing their overall university experience.

As the new academic year begins, MacEwan University continues its tradition of supporting students not just academically, but also socially, ensuring they feel at home in their new surroundings.
