University of Victoria Welcomes Students to 2025-26 Academic Year

The University of Victoria (UVic) has officially welcomed students to the 2025-26 academic year, with a message from Jim Dunsdon, the Associate Vice-President of Student Affairs. New and returning students are encouraged to engage with the community and utilize available resources as they navigate the beginning of term.
Support and Resources for Students
Dunsdon expressed excitement for incoming students and hopes they find the UVic community enriching. He emphasized the importance of the New Student Essentials video series, which serves as a comprehensive guide for newcomers adjusting to campus life. Students are urged to participate in welcome activities and events organized by various student societies, such as the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS) and the Graduate Students’ Society (GSS).
To enhance student safety and well-being, UVic has outlined key resources and expectations. In case of emergencies, students should first contact emergency services by calling 9-1-1, followed by Campus Security at 250-721-7599. Familiarity with building numbers on campus is also essential for effective communication with first responders.
Campus Security operates year-round, providing assistance 24/7 through patrolling and a range of services accessible via the UVic Safety App. This app allows students to report safety concerns, access maps, and connect with security personnel easily.
Addressing Substance Use and Promoting Wellness
As part of UVic’s commitment to student health, the university has introduced a new Substance Use Health Strategy aimed at reducing harm associated with substance use. This strategy reflects feedback from the student body and outlines actions to promote well-being and a supportive campus culture.
Changes to the Non-Academic Misconduct Policy have also been implemented, removing illicit drug use from the list of offenses. These changes encourage students to seek help without fear of repercussions, as protections under the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act ensure that individuals who call for assistance during an overdose will not face criminal charges.
The Student Wellness Centre offers a variety of services for mental, physical, and spiritual health. Students can make appointments with counselors, nurses, or physicians, and the SupportConnect service provides confidential mental health support available around the clock.
Vikes Recreation promotes an inclusive environment with programs catering to diverse abilities and backgrounds. The campus also hosts numerous wellness activities, including yoga sessions, workshops, and community events throughout the academic year.
For students residing on campus, Community Leaders (CLs) are available to assist with orientation, emergency information, and access to resources. Policies regarding guest access in residence areas have been updated to support a smoother transition for new students.
Off-campus residents are encouraged to build positive relationships with neighbors and understand their rights and responsibilities as community members. Engaging with local neighborhood associations can further enhance community ties.
As the academic year begins, UVic urges students to maintain respectful gatherings on campus, adhering to university policies and local regulations. The university is committed to fostering an environment free from sexualized violence, offering support through the Sexualized Violence Resource Office (SVRO). Educational resources and training are available to promote awareness and prevention.
In his closing remarks, Dunsdon expressed well wishes for a successful academic year, inviting students to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. With a vibrant community and ample resources, the University of Victoria aims to provide a supportive environment for all students.
