Victoria’s Trades Explorer Program Equips Youth with Career Skills

A new initiative aimed at empowering youth from marginalized communities has been launched in Esquimalt, British Columbia. The Trades Explorer Program, operated by Fusion Rise, seeks to equip participants with essential skills for careers in the trades. This program provides hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to various trade opportunities, helping young people build confidence as they navigate their future careers.
Oneil Randall, founder and executive director of Fusion Rise, highlighted the importance of early exposure to trade careers. “This program is about opening doors,” he said. “Many young people don’t have the chance to explore careers in the trades until much later. We’re giving them that head start.” The program aims to inspire confidence in participants, allowing them to see the available opportunities in skilled trades.
The inaugural cohort kicked off in September 2023, consisting of ten participants aged between 10 and 24. Among them are three individuals who arrived in Canada less than two months ago. For these newcomers, the program acts as a vital stepping stone, helping them feel welcomed as they adapt to their new environment.
Program Details and Community Support
The Trades Explorer Program spans six weeks and focuses on skill-building across various trades. Participants engage in teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership training, crucial competencies for future employment. The program is designed not only to ignite interest in trades but also to enhance personal development among youth.
Fusion Rise, a Black-led registered charity based in Victoria, aims to uplift marginalized and equity-deserving communities. The organization is actively seeking to expand the program in the future. The current cohort has been made possible through collaborative support from the Victoria Foundation, the Foundation for Black Communities, Home Depot, and the Vancouver Island Caribbean Hub.
Randall expressed optimism about the impact of the program, stating, “We are committed to creating pathways for our youth, especially those who face barriers. This initiative is just the beginning.”
The Trades Explorer Program represents a significant investment in the future of young individuals from diverse backgrounds. By providing them with the tools necessary to pursue careers in skilled trades, the program not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters long-term community growth and resilience. As Fusion Rise looks ahead, the potential for expansion could lead to even greater opportunities for youth across the region.
