Alberta Launches COVID-19 Vaccine Bookings for High-Risk Groups

Alberta has initiated bookings for free COVID-19 vaccinations for residents who qualify under Phase 1 of the government’s vaccination strategy. Beginning on Monday, eligible individuals can schedule their vaccinations based on their risk of severe illness from the virus.
Phase 1 eligibility encompasses a range of underlying medical conditions. This includes those with cerebrovascular disease, heart conditions, chronic liver diseases, chronic lung diseases, chronic kidney diseases, cystic fibrosis, and diabetes mellitus (both type 1 and type 2). Additionally, individuals classified as obese, pregnant, or suffering from tuberculosis are also included in this phase.
Moreover, Albertans with disabilities such as Down syndrome, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cerebral palsy, congenital disabilities, spinal cord injuries, and various developmental disabilities qualify for the vaccine. Mental health conditions like mood disorders, depression, schizophrenia, and spectrum disorders further expand the list of eligible conditions.
Booking Process and Phase 2 Details
For those who do not fall into any of the aforementioned categories, appointments for Phase 2 will become available starting on October 20, 2023. Residents in this group will need to pay a fee of $100 for their COVID-19 vaccination.
Vaccinations are primarily offered at public health clinics across the province. Some pharmacies are also participating by providing the vaccine for a fee. Eligible Albertans are encouraged to book their appointments either online or by contacting Health Link at 811.
The Alberta government emphasizes the importance of vaccination in controlling the spread of COVID-19, particularly among populations most at risk. As the province continues its vaccination rollout, health officials are urging residents to stay informed about their eligibility and the appropriate steps to obtain their vaccinations.
