Americans Voice Concerns Over Rising Health Care Costs

A recent AP-NORC poll reveals that a significant majority of U.S. adults are increasingly worried about the rising costs of health care. As many prepare for next year’s health coverage options and face uncertainty due to an ongoing government shutdown, approximately 60% of Americans express being “extremely” or “very” concerned about escalating health expenses in the coming year. This anxiety spans across various demographics, affecting both insured and uninsured individuals.
The survey indicates that around 40% of respondents are also deeply worried about affording necessary health care and medications, accessing needed care, or potentially losing health insurance altogether. With open enrollment for Medicare and other health plans approaching in November, these concerns have taken on added urgency.
Many Americans feel particularly vulnerable as federal policies loom that may lead to dramatic increases in health insurance premiums or even loss of coverage. Latoya Wilson, an independent nurse consultant from Lafayette, Louisiana, shared her experiences while currently relying on a health insurance plan from the Affordable Care Act marketplace. In light of recent developments, Wilson has sought additional employment opportunities, highlighting her anxiety over potential premium increases and the desire for the stability that employer-sponsored insurance can provide. “Anything worse than what I already have is pretty scary,” she remarked.
Health Care as a Top Concern for Americans
Health care remains a critical issue for the American public. Approximately 80% of U.S. adults rate the subject as “extremely” or “very” important, with nearly 90% of Democrats and about 75% of Republicans sharing similar sentiments. This widespread concern places health care alongside the economy as a top priority for voters.
The political landscape surrounding health care is complex, particularly following President Donald Trump’s recent legislation, which cuts over $1 trillion from federal health care and food assistance over the next decade. The bill enforces stricter work requirements for aid recipients and reallocates some federal costs to the states. Supporters argue that these measures will prevent misuse of the system, but projections from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office suggest millions could lose health insurance coverage as a result.
The current congressional impasse over renewing Affordable Care Act subsidies has compounded these issues, resulting in a government shutdown that has persisted for over three weeks. Democratic lawmakers insist any funding legislation they support must include an extension of these subsidies, which have made health insurance more affordable for many Americans. Republican leaders have expressed willingness to negotiate, but only after the government is reopened.
Public Trust and Political Divides
Public trust in government leaders to address health care concerns is waning. Many Americans, including Caleb Richter, a certified nursing assistant from Belleville, Wisconsin, express skepticism about the federal government’s commitment to improving health care access. “It feels like they’re not trying,” he stated, emphasizing the essential role of government in providing a better quality of life for its citizens.
The poll highlights a significant ideological divide regarding the government’s responsibility for ensuring health coverage. About 80% of Democrats believe it is the government’s duty to guarantee health coverage for all citizens, while only about 33% of Republicans share this view.
Approval ratings for President Trump’s handling of health care are notably low, with only 30% of U.S. adults expressing approval. This sentiment is echoed by nearly all Democrats, approximately 80% of independents, and one-third of Republicans. Wilson believes that Trump should focus on initiatives that benefit the collective, particularly working-class individuals. Conversely, Michelle Truszkowski, a disabled veteran from Sterling Heights, Michigan, appreciates the president’s emphasis on reducing fraud within the health care system, reinforcing her belief that health care should not be regarded as an inherent right.
Concerns about health care are matched by uncertainty about which political party is better equipped to manage these pressing issues. About 40% of Americans trust Democrats more regarding health care, compared to 25% who favor Republicans. A notable segment, approximately 25%, trusts neither party, while about 10% express equal trust in both.
Despite differing opinions on political affiliation, many Americans, including independents, express frustration with the current state of health care discussions in Congress. Richter commented on the need for improved funding and support for hospital staff, indicating a willingness to accept higher taxes if it would ensure better health care access for those in need. His disappointment with federal lawmakers was evident, as he characterized their behavior as akin to “high school kids arguing.”
The AP-NORC poll, conducted from October 9 to 13 with a sample of 1,289 adults, highlights the urgent need for addressing health care concerns as millions face uncertain futures regarding their coverage and costs. The margin of sampling error stands at ±3.8 percentage points.
As the political environment continues to evolve, the public’s anxiety over health care costs remains a pivotal factor in shaping national discussions and policies in the coming months.
