Annual Slo-Pitch Tournament to Support Men’s Mental Health

The seventh annual Clayton Askoty Memorial slo-pitch tournament is set to take place from September 5 to September 7, 2024, in Taylor, British Columbia. The event aims to raise funds for suicide prevention, with proceeds benefiting the Movember Foundation, an organization dedicated to men’s health issues, including mental health support.
Event Details and Activities
Hosted at the Taylor baseball diamonds near the Taylor District Ice Centre, located at 9880 Cherry Avenue West, the tournament will feature a variety of activities designed to engage participants and spectators alike. Each team is guaranteed a minimum of five games, and there will be a home run derby, alongside a chance to enter a 50/50 draw. Participants will also compete for a total of $18,000 in cash prizes.
This tournament holds special significance, as it is named in memory of Clayton Askoty, who tragically took his own life in 2012. His sister, Valerie Askoty, serves as a driving force behind the event and is the chief of the Prophet River First Nation. The tournament not only commemorates Clayton but also aims to raise awareness about mental health and the importance of suicide prevention.
Registration and Participation
Registration for the tournament is currently open, with an entry fee set at $550 per team. The event features both men’s and women’s divisions, encouraging a diverse range of players to participate. Interested teams can register or obtain more information by contacting Valerie Askoty at (587) 343-4973 or Ferlin Makadahay at (250) 264-7468.
The Clayton Askoty Memorial slo-pitch tournament not only aims to provide an enjoyable sporting experience but also serves as a vital platform for promoting mental health awareness and support. Through community engagement and fundraising efforts, the event underscores the significance of addressing mental health issues, particularly among men.
