Bow Island Health Centre Expands Emergency Hours Amid Staffing Shortage

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has announced an extension of the emergency department hours at the Bow Island Health Centre. The department will now operate from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, and from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from Friday to Monday. This change aims to improve access to emergency medical care for local residents, despite ongoing challenges related to staffing shortages.
AHS acknowledges the persistent shortage of clinical personnel, which has hindered the ability to provide regular 24-hour emergency coverage. According to AHS, local physicians have stepped up to extend coverage hours, allowing the emergency department to accommodate both emergent patients and low-acuity walk-ins. Physicians will be available on-site from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. During the hours outside of these times, physicians will be on call for patients who arrive between 11:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Continuity of Care Amid Staffing Challenges
When the emergency department is closed, nursing staff will continue to provide care for acute care patients and long-term care residents on-site. AHS is actively recruiting for additional positions within the community to ensure that local residents have access to necessary healthcare services.
Residents are advised to call 911 for any medical emergencies. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are prepared to respond to critical situations and facilitate transport of patients to neighbouring facilities. For those seeking emergency services, the Taber Health Centre and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital are available options, located approximately 57 km away from Bow Island.
For non-emergency health-related questions, residents can contact Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7. Individuals requiring non-emergency medical care are encouraged to reach out to their family physicians for assistance. AHS continues to prioritize the health and safety of the Bow Island community while working through these staffing challenges.
