British Columbia Launches COVID-19 and Flu Vaccination Campaign

As the respiratory illness season approaches, British Columbia has initiated its annual vaccination campaign for both COVID-19 and influenza. Notifications began reaching residents on October 7, 2023, providing links to schedule their vaccine appointments, with notifications continuing through November.

Appointments for vaccinations will commence on October 14, 2023, prioritizing individuals at the highest risk of severe illness. The vaccines will be offered at no cost to anyone over the age of six months. This year, the province will provide the updated LP.8.1 versions of the Moderna (Spikevax) and Pfizer (Comirnaty) vaccines for COVID-19.

Residents have the option to receive the flu and COVID-19 vaccines separately or at the same time. Health officials have emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating that it not only protects individuals but also their families, neighbors, and co-workers. They reiterated that staying current with vaccinations is crucial for guarding against emerging variants and enhancing immunity.

High-Risk Groups Encouraged to Vaccinate

Specific populations are being urged to get vaccinated due to their increased risk of severe illness and complications. These include seniors, individuals who are immunocompromised, residents of long-term care facilities, pregnant individuals, Indigenous communities, and those living with chronic illnesses or underlying health conditions. Notably, children under five years old are identified as a high-risk group for influenza.

In a statement to CTV News, the British Columbia health ministry remarked, “Vaccination not only helps protect individuals, but also their families, neighbours and co-workers. As we enter another respiratory illness season, getting immunized against influenza and COVID-19 reduces the risk of severe illness and helps keep our communities strong.”
