Community Mourns the Passing of Bruce Edward Humfrey at 74
Bruce Edward Humfrey, a cherished member of the Alberta farming community, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, at the age of 74 after a brief but intense battle with cancer. His family, including his wife Norma Humfrey, children, and grandchildren, are left to grieve his loss and celebrate his legacy.
Bruce is survived by his children, Clint and Christel Humfrey of High River, Alberta, Ginger Humfrey of High River, and Clay and Amanda Humfrey of Mazeppa, Alberta, along with their children Ryley, Paris, Cash, and his other grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. Bruce’s family also includes his sisters Darlene Schloeder, Dorothy Bietz, and Beverley Whittle, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Born on April 12, 1951, in Mazeppa, Alberta, Bruce was the only son among four sisters. He grew up on the family farm, where he developed a deep connection to agriculture. The family lived across from their grandfather’s general store and post office, where Bruce first learned the values of business and community. He fondly recalled trading gopher tails for candy and assisting with mail delivery.
Bruce attended school in Gladys Ridge and High River, engaging in various activities, including the Gladys 4-H Beef Club and curling. His love for farming was evident from a young age, as he worked alongside his father and uncle before officially joining the family partnership as an adult. His academic journey continued at Olds College, where he studied Agricultural Mechanics and met his future wife, Norma Evenson. They married on May 6, 1972, and embraced life on the farm together.
Over the years, Bruce’s interests expanded beyond farming. He became an avid guitar player, earned his pilot’s license, and enjoyed boating at Little Bow with friends. Later in life, Bruce and Norma became winter residents of Arizona, where they continued to enjoy their retirement. His wide-ranging knowledge of history informed his views on agriculture and politics, and he was known for his sharp mental math skills and ability to find great deals.
Bruce’s commitment to his family was evident in his role as a grandfather, especially as an enthusiastic supporter of his grandchildren’s rodeo activities. He cherished the updates and “rodeo reports” from his family, which brought him great joy.
In addition to his family’s loss, the community of Gladys Ridge, Blackie, High River, and Mazeppa mourns Bruce’s passing. He was well-known for his engagement with neighbors and friends, often welcoming them into his office for a chat.
The Humfrey family expresses gratitude to the staff of Rockyview and High River Hospitals, along with the Arthur Child Cancer Centre and Foothills Country Hospice, for their compassionate care during Bruce’s illness.
A funeral service to honor Bruce’s life will take place on January 2, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at the High River Baptist Church. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be livestreamed via Bruce’s Tribute Page at www.lylereeves.com.
Bruce Edward Humfrey leaves behind a rich legacy of love, hard work, and community spirit that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
