Garth Finch Transitions from Cancer Research to Communications
Garth Finch, a graduate of Western University, has successfully transitioned from a career in cancer research to the field of communications. Finch, who earned a Bachelor of Medical Science in 2020, originally envisioned a future in the laboratory, focusing on biochemistry and cancer biology. His experience working on melanoma research, however, led him to discover a passion for storytelling and public engagement within the scientific community.
During his undergraduate studies, Finch found joy in communicating scientific discoveries to the public. “I just loved telling the story,” he stated, noting the satisfaction he derived from explaining how research fits into the broader scientific narrative. This realization prompted him to shift his focus towards communications, which he described as a challenging but fulfilling decision.
Master’s Program Shapes New Path
After taking time off to travel and work, Finch returned to Western University to pursue a Master of Media in Journalism and Communication (MMJC). He found the program to be a perfect fit for his evolving interests. “My experience in MMJC was just phenomenal. It was everything I wanted and more,” he remarked.
Finch likened the MMJC program to a bootcamp, where he honed his skills in science communication. He participated in practical exercises such as a mock press conference, where he acted as a CEO facing scrutiny over a faulty product. “I got to apply all those strategic communication skills I’d been learning in the program in real time,” he explained.
Throughout the intensive one-year course, Finch appreciated the engaging coursework, supportive professors, and access to state-of-the-art equipment. He tailored his assignments to reflect his interests, including a project with Wellspring London, a cancer support organization, where he developed a video series for their 25th anniversary. “Those projects couldn’t be done without the structure of the program,” he noted.
Career Development and Future Aspirations
Graduating with a strong portfolio, Finch secured an internship at the Métis National Council, where he has continued to work post-graduation. This role allows him to engage at the intersection of communications and policy, a position he finds deeply rewarding. “It’s really values-driven – work with a purpose. I really wanted that,” Finch stated.
As he looks to the future, Finch is open to various career paths that blend science and storytelling. He acknowledges that his professional journey has not followed a linear trajectory, which he views as a strength. “My path has never been linear, and I think that’s my strength,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to making meaningful connections through his work.
Finch’s background in theatre has also proven beneficial in his new career. He leveraged his performing arts experience to connect with audiences more effectively. A dual citizen of Canada and the UK, he spent his formative years in Paisley, Scotland, and often returned to Canada during summers, easing his transition to life as an international student at Western.
His involvement in the university’s supportive community, including his role as a Soph—a student mentor—further enriched his experience. “Western does a terrific job with the Soph program,” he remarked, recalling the close-knit relationships he forged during that time.
Finch continues to balance his passion for science with his new communications role, engaging in freelance work to train AI models for clinical applications. Reflecting on his journey, he concludes that his move to communications feels like a natural fit. “I’ve never felt that sense of being where I’m meant to be before. I’m absolutely there now,” he affirmed.
As Garth Finch embarks on this new chapter, he remains focused on creating impactful connections and fostering understanding between science and the public.
