Hamiltonian Faces Terminal Diagnosis with Love and Determination

A Hamilton resident, Cole DeLargie-Campbell, is navigating life after receiving a terminal diagnosis of a brain tumour known as meningioma. The news, delivered in November 2023, has prompted DeLargie-Campbell to reflect on their journey, focusing on love, meaningful experiences, and making the most of the time they have left.

Four years ago, at the age of 34, DeLargie-Campbell learned they had a brain tumour. After several surgeries and treatments, they were informed that the tumour, which they affectionately named “Brian,” is now a permanent condition. Medical professionals estimate they have anywhere from a few months to two years to live. This grim prognosis has led them to prioritize their relationship with their wife, Kaila DeLargie-Campbell, whom they married in 2021 after 13 years together.

DeLargie-Campbell spoke candidly about their emotional journey during an interview with CBC Hamilton. Initially overwhelmed by sadness upon receiving the diagnosis, they acknowledged that the experience has transformed their perspective on life. “How often do you get to plan your death?” they questioned, highlighting how this experience has become a catalyst for deeper appreciation of everyday moments.

As the new year approaches, DeLargie-Campbell is committed to focusing on creating meaningful memories. They have begun writing journals and compiling a bucket list filled with aspirations. Among their wishes is to celebrate their 40th birthday, renew their wedding vows with Kaila, and play Grand Theft Auto VI, slated for release in November 2026.

DeLargie-Campbell’s health challenges have significantly impacted their daily life, rendering them unable to drive or work. In response, friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the couple during this difficult time, ensuring they can spend as much time together as possible.

The couple’s bond is evident as DeLargie-Campbell expresses gratitude for Kaila’s unwavering support. “I feel like I’m still in the honeymoon phase with my wife. She’s just the most amazing person and I’m not ready to go,” they said, visibly emotional. The couple shares their home with three cats, Monty, Grayson, and Pans, and DeLargie-Campbell also reflects on the joy of watching them grow older, a prospect now tinged with sadness.

DeLargie-Campbell’s bucket list is a testament to their desire to embrace life fully. They have included items such as going go-karting, attending a monster truck show, and exploring Canada via VIA Rail. The anticipation of playing the latest installment in the popular video game series underscores their commitment to enjoying life’s pleasures, even amidst adversity.

As they contemplate their future, DeLargie-Campbell is also mindful of the legacy they will leave behind. They have expressed a desire to leave letters and journals for Kaila, providing comfort and connection after their passing. “I want to be a reminder that everyone should live every day like it’s a gift,” they stated emphatically.

The rare diagnosis of Grade 3 meningioma, which affects only a small percentage of cases, adds complexity to DeLargie-Campbell’s situation. Dr. Jeffrey Greenspoon, a radiation oncologist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, explained that the majority of meningiomas are slow-growing and can be treated effectively. Unfortunately, DeLargie-Campbell’s condition is classified as malignant and poses significant health risks.

In light of their diagnosis, DeLargie-Campbell has become an advocate for awareness around meningiomas. They emphasize the importance of self-advocacy in healthcare, recalling a previous instance where they were dismissed despite serious symptoms. “I don’t want this to happen to anybody else,” they remarked, urging others to seek medical attention when something feels off.

As DeLargie-Campbell awaits further medical evaluations, including an MRI scheduled for March 2024, they remain resolute in their intention to live life to the fullest. Their journey serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. “Do all your firsts, get them out of the way, create a bucket list for your life because you never know when it’s your time,” they advised, encapsulating their philosophy in the face of uncertainty.
