Health Minister to Experience 24-Hour Wait at Moncton Hospital ER
New Brunswick’s Minister of Health, Dr. John Dornan, has committed to spending 24 hours in the emergency department at Moncton Hospital to gain firsthand insight into patient experiences while waiting for care. His decision follows an invitation extended during an announcement about a new endoscopy suite at the hospital on March 15, 2024.
While a specific date for this initiative has not been finalized, Dr. Dornan outlined his intentions to ensure the experience does not disrupt hospital operations. “I don’t want to disrupt services. I don’t want to be a distraction. I’ll bring a good book,” he stated. He acknowledged that many patients often rely on vending machines for snacks during long waits and plans to embrace this reality as part of his experience.
Dr. Dornan, who has a background as an endocrinologist and ICU physician, noted that his previous hospital shifts have involved intensive patient care. However, he emphasized that the experience of waiting without knowing when one will receive treatment is unique. “To sit there and not have much to do, not knowing when you’re going to be called… I have never experienced that,” he remarked.
His initiative received recognition from Glen Savoie, the opposition leader, who praised the effort but highlighted the differences between being healthy and experiencing illness. “When you are a person who’s actually sick and in need of care, that wait feels very different,” Savoie remarked, emphasizing the emotional weight of such experiences.
Dr. Dornan’s aim with this initiative is not only to better understand the challenges faced by patients but also to foster empathy in his role as a health minister. “It’s one thing for people to tell me what they feel like. It’s another thing to be able to say, yes, brother, I know what it feels like,” he expressed.
The specific parameters and date for the visit will be determined by the individual who extended the invitation. Dr. Dornan has already expressed eagerness to participate in this personal endeavor, which he believes will enhance his understanding of the healthcare challenges in New Brunswick.
As healthcare systems across Canada grapple with increased demand and resource constraints, initiatives like Dr. Dornan’s could illuminate the patient experience and potentially inform future health policies.
