La Salle County Health Department Launches Flu Vaccination Drive

The La Salle County Health Department has commenced its annual flu vaccination program, offering both seasonal and high-dose flu vaccines to the public. Vaccinations are available daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., aimed at protecting the community as the cold season approaches.
Residents aged 65 and older can receive the high-dose influenza vaccine, which is specifically designed to bolster immunity in older adults. Additionally, the department will provide the Vaccine for Children (VFC) flu vaccine for children aged six months to 18 years who lack insurance or are enrolled in Medicaid. All vaccines offered by the health department are preservative-free, ensuring safety and efficacy.
The cost for the seasonal flu shot is set at $25, while the high-dose influenza vaccine is priced at $70. Participants must present a valid insurance card and a photo ID at the time of vaccination. Notably, doctor’s orders are not required for the flu vaccine, offering greater accessibility to residents. Parents or guardians must accompany children during their vaccination.
In a convenient option, residents can receive a COVID-19 vaccination at the same time as their flu shot. However, appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations must be pre-scheduled. To secure an appointment, individuals can contact the health department at 815-433-3366.
The health department emphasizes the importance of vaccination in preventing influenza and COVID-19, particularly as the colder months bring an increase in flu cases. They encourage all eligible residents to take advantage of these vaccination opportunities to safeguard their health and the health of those around them.
In addition to vaccination, the health department advocates for good hygiene practices to further reduce the risk of flu transmission. Residents are advised to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing and to educate children about avoiding contact between hands and mucous membranes. Frequent and thorough hand washing is highlighted as one of the most effective measures against the flu.
The guidelines can be summarized with the three C’s:
Clean: Wash hands regularly with soap and warm water.
Cover: Always cover coughs and sneezes.
Contain: Stay home when feeling unwell to limit the spread of germs.
The La Salle County Health Department is located at 717 Etna Road, Ottawa, Illinois. For more information about the vaccination program or to schedule an appointment, individuals can call 815-433-3366 or visit their website at lasallecounty.org.
