Manitoba Introduces Doctor to Enhance Health Links Service

The Manitoba government has announced the addition of a doctor to its Health Links–Info Santé service, a move aimed at reducing unnecessary referrals to emergency rooms. This initiative is part of the province’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access and efficiency for residents.

Health Links–Info Santé is a nurse-managed, bilingual telephone program that provides assessment, triage, and health advice. Patients can call the service for guidance on their health concerns, and depending on the assessment, nurses may refer them to family physicians, walk-in clinics, or emergency care facilities. According to Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara, the new doctor, who began working earlier this month, is available to assist callers from 08:00 to 18:00. Another clinician is expected to join the program by late December, providing overnight support.

The addition of physicians to the Health Links service aims to alleviate pressure on the healthcare system. Asagwara noted that many Manitobans have experienced long waits in emergency rooms after calling Health Links. By providing more direct medical consultation, the service hopes to streamline patient care and prevent unnecessary emergency room visits.

On average, Health Links receives approximately 400 calls per day. Data from the program shows that about 40 patients are triaged to emergency departments daily. In the first ten days following the introduction of the doctor, 160 patients were transferred to speak with the physician, resulting in only 10 referrals to emergency rooms. This indicates a significant potential for improving patient outcomes and reducing emergency room congestion.

New Bursary Program for Emergency Medical Responders

In a related effort to bolster healthcare services, the Manitoba government has announced a new $5,000 bursary program for emergency medical responder students. This initiative, detailed in a news release on Wednesday, aims to attract more students to the field by offering financial assistance. Recipients of the bursary will be required to enter a one-year return-of-service agreement upon hiring, ensuring they work in rural Manitoba.

Minister Asagwara emphasized the program’s significance, stating, “We’re putting trainees in rural municipalities, where they can gain hands-on experience on real-world emergency calls and develop a passion for rural Manitoba.” By the fall of 2026, the province anticipates that 50 to 60 emergency medical responder students will graduate and become eligible for employment within provincial emergency medical services.

Despite this positive step, concerns remain regarding the capabilities of emergency medical responders. Jason Linklater, president of the Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals, pointed out that while emergency medical responders play a crucial role, they lack the extensive training required for high-acuity medical emergencies. He noted that critical situations, such as cardiac arrests or severe trauma, necessitate the simultaneous intervention of two fully trained paramedics.

Linklater highlighted that the limited scope of practice for emergency medical responders does not equate to the level of care that paramedics can provide. Meanwhile, the New Democratic Party (NDP) has indicated that only 18 of the promised 200 paramedics have been added to the workforce since the party’s election in 2023.

The Manitoba government’s initiatives aim to strengthen the healthcare system by improving access to medical services and enhancing the training of emergency responders, ultimately benefiting residents across the province.
