Montmagny Initiative Tackles Obesity with Community Solutions

In Montmagny, a small town located in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, a collaborative initiative has emerged to address the growing public health concern of obesity. Local residents, health professionals, and policymakers are joining forces to develop compassionate strategies that reflect the lived experiences of those affected by this condition, which impacts one in four Canadians.
Montmagny has witnessed a significant rise in obesity rates, driven in part by its aging population. Laurence Berthelet, a public health professional from the Quebec City suburb of Lévis, has been at the forefront of this effort. With support from the Fonds de recherche du Québec’s Engagement program, she partnered with Dr. Géraldine Layani, an assistant clinical professor at Université de Montréal, to launch COLLAB-INTER-360-Obésité. This initiative aims to create inclusive, cross-sector solutions rooted in the everyday realities of individuals living with obesity.
Addressing a Complex Health Crisis
Obesity is a complex chronic disease affecting approximately 27 percent of Canadians, and it is associated with serious health complications, increased mortality, and social stigma. Dr. Layani emphasizes the need for a shift in focus within the healthcare system. “Our system continues to prioritize treatment over prevention and social determinants of health,” she stated. The mission of COLLAB-INTER-360-Obésité is to foster a collaborative learning community, allowing participants to share their experiences and work together to devise practical solutions that enhance the quality of life for those considered obese.
Berthelet views this initiative as an opportunity to rethink healthcare practices. “While the healthcare system faces challenges, it is also a chance to innovate,” she remarked. “By co-creating solutions with local communities, we can ensure that the strategies developed are relevant and resourceful.”
Community Engagement and Workshops
To build this learning community, the initiative employs local consultations, collaborative workshops, and open discussions. The first workshop took place in March 2025 and focused on establishing strong collaborative relationships among participants. Dr. Layani noted the enthusiasm of those involved. “The participants are highly motivated to work together and create constructive dialogue,” she said.
In May 2025, a second workshop attracted around 20 participants. During this three-hour session, attendees engaged in small group discussions based on fictional case studies inspired by real patient experiences. Participants collaborated to generate solutions and strategies for implementation. A third workshop is slated for the fall, which will formalize the governance of the learning community. Additionally, a citizen forum will be organized to inform the Montmagny community about the research process and findings.
Dr. Layani highlighted the dual nature of obesity as both a medical and social issue. “Helping patients regain agency means raising public awareness about the experiences of individuals affected by obesity,” she explained. She also stressed the importance of facilitating access to community resources, which is essential for empowering individuals to take control of their health, especially in a time of healthcare shortages.
The ultimate ambition of this initiative is to extend its approach across Quebec, addressing not only obesity but also other health issues. By focusing on community-driven solutions, the organizers aim to create a more inclusive healthcare environment that prioritizes the needs of individuals living with chronic conditions.
